The complete ledger scrutiny checklist for Tally audits

A practical, category-wise checklist of the ledger scrutiny checks every audit team should run on TallyPrime books — assets, liabilities, income, expenses and the journal-voucher traps.

Ledger scrutiny is where most audit time goes — and where most findings hide. Yet in many firms it still runs on an inherited Excel checklist and whatever sampling the timeline allows. This post lays out a category-wise checklist you can hand to your team today, whether they run it manually or let software do it.

Liability-side checks

Start with creditors and statutory liabilities, because that is where both misstatement and non-compliance concentrate:

  • Creditors with debit balances — advances to suppliers sitting inside Sundry Creditors overstate both sides.
  • Suppliers without GSTINs — an input-credit risk and a red flag for fictitious parties.
  • Bill-wise totals not matching ledger closing balances — usually unadjusted on-account entries.
  • Bill-wise outstandings older than 180 days — Section 16(2) ITC reversal territory.
  • GST and TDS liabilities during the year — was what was collected actually remitted?

Asset-side checks

On the asset side, cash and debtors deserve the most suspicion:

  • Cash ledgers going negative on any day of the year — books that cannot be true.
  • Customers without GSTINs on B2B sales.
  • Debit balances in customer ledgers that are really unbilled advances.
  • Fixed-asset ledgers with credit balances, and balances parked in Capital Work in Progress for years.
  • Bank ledgers with outstanding debit balances that never reconcile.

The journal-voucher traps

A disproportionate share of manipulation flows through journal vouchers, because they bypass the natural discipline of sales, purchase, receipt and payment vouchers. Scrutinise sales, purchases, cash and bank movements recorded as JVs, and any transactions dated on national holidays.

Running this at 100% instead of sampling

The honest problem with this checklist is volume: on a client with 1,500 ledgers and tens of thousands of entries, a manual pass can only ever sample. That is the gap EasyAnk closes — it syncs the books live from TallyPrime and runs every check on this list — and many more — on every single entry, every 15 minutes, with each flag traced to the exact entries behind it.

Run all of this automatically. EasyAnk syncs your client’s TallyPrime books live, runs scrutiny checks on every entry, and drafts the statements and annexures your audit file needs.
